Nor'wester Auto Rally, 1967

Date: September 2-4, 1967

Conceived by Rainier Auto Sports Club of Bellevue, Washington as a "driver oriented" rally. Covering 1000 miles, approximately 70% paved and 30% gravel it was sanctioned by the Northwest Rally Council as part of the Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Western Canada championship series for 1967. Drew 30 entries from up and down the west coast and Canada, with the eventual winner coming from as far away as Indiana. Prize money was donated by a number of sports car related businesses. Total purse was $300.

Start Location: Bel Square Shopping Center 104th & 8th, Bellevue, WA

Winners:

John Carlin and David Lotterer of South Bend Indiana won the Equipped class in a Corvair Monza with error of 00:01:25 over 1000 and 36 controls.

Doug and Jane Daniels of Salem Oregon won Unequpped class in a Barracuda.

Summary from the event guide:

The first annual Nor'wester is a combined effort of the Rainier Auto Sports Club and other individuals and clubs throughout the Northwest. The RASC appreciates the support and aid given by these other clubs and interested persons.

The rally is basically an event incorporating long distance touring, closed sections and navigational sections.

The first day of the rally will commence in Bellevue, Washington and end in Wenatchee, east of the Cascade mountains. This route will enable the organizers to use some of the most scenic and seldom-traveled roads in the state. Gravel and dirt roads used throughout the rally are good to excellent and not of the "car-breaking" variety.

The second day of the rally will see contestants travel from Wenatchee, south through the Yakima valley, through the Blue Mountains and north to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for an overnight stop.

The third day of the rally, the cars will complete the around-the-state loop by traveling north and west through the forests and mountains of eastern and northern Washington to the Wenatchee area where they will finish in the early afternoon.

All closed sections will require entrants to maintain an average speed (within any legal posted limit) over the section.

In general, all of the route will be directed away from main-traveled highways and holiday traffic.
