Raindrop came off fine. We scored 15 controls, and the finish was conductive
to chat and exchanging stories.
[Results were attached. to paper distribution]
Wild West had dust problems. RASC escaped having a stage on Friday night;
we couldn't have raised a crew anyway. Rod Johnson, Nolte, and Jarvis showed
up anyway and got to watch comets on crisp, pleasant night.
The Saturday stage had a proper representation for the flat, beat up "Stillwater
Glen"-area stage.
Janice rolled the Celica. Rui Brasil's Audi 4000 is getting sooo tired
that they finished the stage, and announced retirement from the rally.
(The new A2 has been moved to Olympia for completion). Sam Bryan finished.
Nathan Tennis's Saab went "clunk" at the start line, and eventually
left on a trailer.
The stage's worst incident happened when Terry Unger put his (ex-Al Perez)
Arrow into a tree: 40+ to zero in abt. 18 inches. Bill Latham watched it
happen from his road guard position. The driver got out and placed a triangle,
then sat down, "feeling bad". As luck would have it, Kevin Needham
in the Sweep Jeep arrived about the same time the finish HAM notified us
of the incident.
Although appearing just "shaken up", Kevin decided this may be
something more, and activated the "medical emergency" system.
While he checked for life-threatening injuries, the 911 operator got the
word out to the area medical teams, and about 6 of them poured into the
stage location within 15 minutes! Driver and navigator will be all right,
but the car is seriously bent.
Another "item" was the usual rearranging of the Finish location.
There was a flash of painted stake flying into the woods, followed by the
now-standard "Sheesh, the Flying Finish stake has disappeared. We'll
just have to guess where Ron expected it to be." Only this time, the
sign was
moved down-course even further between stages when cars with smelly brakes
sailed past the Stop control!
June 7: The Oregon Trail Pro-Rally is chaired by Ben Bradley. Current
plan is to use 4 roads twice, west of St. Helens. Mike Nagle is Chief of
Controls (503)244-8570, wk (503) 221-5100. John Nispel is bringing down
a crew, and won't turn anyone down (360) 357-3207. The plan will probably
be to gather at Vernonia and tour further west to the stages. Figure 3+
hours from Seattle.
A proposal is floating around to start some sort of NW Touring Rally
series. Sounds like a neat idea until one considers 5 or 6 rallyists in
a room deciding on the rules. If it would get more entrants, it might be
a good idea.
RASC got stuck with the September Saturday Nighter. The rallymaster
job can be yours...just don't show up for a meeting!
A TSD night rally in Ohio had a near tragedy when a team made a wrong
turn and found themselves in someone's front yard. This was the second
car to enter the yard, and the owner shot at the car, injuring both driver
and navigator. They made it to the next CP and went to a nearby hospital.
The shooter was arrested.
The Panama-Alaska Rally kicks off June 1, and ends up in Anchorage on
June 25. This may be a special "event", with 53 "old"
cars in the competitive class, and another 40 or so as non-competitors
in later model cars. (There must some sort of "deal" going, as
it looks a Jeep parade.) Jeff Zwart has a Porsche (#6), Bob Trinder has
his 240Z (#8), Walt Peterson/Satch in a 240Z (#9), Walt Kammer and Jackie
in a Datsun 510 (#13). The 53 car list has the usual classic Porsche's,
Escorts, and Mercedes, but I counted 9 Mustangs, and 4 Falcons ! The event
overnights in Butte, Montana on June 17. Might be worth a sightseeing trip.
Roster
*The new DEX Directories don't list the new area codes with the numbers.
We have until November 15 to learn the new area codes. Everyone outside
of metropolitan Seattle will now have something other than our old "206".
(Now we know why Alison and Jarvis didn't get caught up in the "360"
code last year- Gig Harbor is part of the new "253" area.) Get
used to dialing 10 digits.

Trivia
*The note accompanying Clyborne's dues mentioned that Ron proposed
to Michelle in a horse carriage in front of the forum in Rome! They've
entered the Quattro in the non-competitive class of the Panama>Alaska
Rally.
* Pete Shelton has Tim Paterson's old RX7.
* The Breazeale's PRO-Rally Rabbit will sport the colors of Bardahl- Yellow
with black checkerboard. Cristy says they've landed Bry VW Auto Wrecking
as a sponsor, too.
* Luke Hillman leaves in August for a job in Japan.
* Andrew Johnson graduates this year- going to Purdue !
* This is rather far off, but it looks like quite a few RASC folks will
be at the SOVREN races at SIR on July 4th weekend. Bar-B-Que afterwards?
*Service Horror story of the month: Jerry Wright at JLC in Kent had a Mazda
626 towed into his shop. It didn't run since the "dynamite" sound
system was installed. The cause was apparent when the car was placed on
a lift. The guys had used 3" long screws to hold down the sound stuff-speakers,
amps, power packs, etc. They "scored" the fuel line in 2 places.
