. The Nor'Wester (running on Sept 20-21) checkout was a success. The
Breazeales, Roy Ward and Joel Wright, and Jerry and Lucas (in an un-air
conditioned pickup) did the whole thing. Rather more than the rallyists will
see as they shortened Sunday a bit and decided that the rallyists don't need
Monday at all! So it'll be just a loooong weekend rally, finishing in Cour
d'Alene on Sunday, with awards at 8pm or so.
Roy poured over maps, then selected great roads. Hows about a 53 mile
TSD, 45 miles of it gravel? There aren't any real rough sections, although
Roy has some "before" stories about what are now smooth roads.
Current entries include event winners from 1968 (R. Dale Kraushaar) and 1969
(Steve Richards). The hotel at Cour d'Alene isn't holding rooms any longer,
and the nearest facilities are closer to Spokane. The $175 entry fee includes
3 meals. The web site has info: http://www.eskimo.com./~jhines/mpm.
. The RASC "Saturday Niter":, known to the event organizers as the "Rainier
Railroad", it taking form. Sometimes its hard to write traps OUT of a rally.
No new info or secrets- it'll start at the Eastgate Park n"Ride and finish
damn near the rallymaster's house (Bothell).
. The Road Not Taken Rally-by Cristy Breazeale
"There's a checkpoint." Jim's voice sliced through the fog that had crept
over my brain, Had I really been asleep?
Halfway through the Road Not Taken, the all-night all-graval rally put on by
Twisty Roads Rally Group , I'd been fighting sleep for a couple of hours, and
for just a few moments there, I think sleep was winning.. So as not to alarm
my driver-husband, I quickly responded with the wittiest, most intelligent
reply I could muster, "Huh? Wha?"
OK, so that wasn't very confidence inspiring, but it was the best I
could do at the time. It was a good thing the checkpoint was there though,
because there was a left turn just after that and we would have missed it
The lunchbreak was next. I needed a rest, also a good shot of caffine.
The organizers had again arranged for a couple of businesses to be
open for us, as we needed them. The midnight lunch stop in Lincoln City was
at the same BP gas station and deli as in previous years. While there, we
swapped horror stories: one navvy misread the same tulip three times as they
kept coming back to the same spot to try to pick up the route. This was the
same team who cut their teeth on this rally just two years ago, arriving at
the finish hours behind everyone else, after doubling the rally mileage.
Another team flatted a tire which launched the car into the scenery and the
navigator into the side door and the glovebox. They rearranged a bit of sheet
metal in the episode, but changed the tire and roared back to win their
class.
This was an intense rally that started at 6:30pm, and ran till 5 am,
starting almost every TSD at the end of the last one. Jim wanted to bring his
new 4WD playtoy, but unfortunately the Audi isn't wired for driving lights
yet. Perhaps its just as well; we have a host af new scratches down both
sides of the Saab, and the clutch will never be the same.
Still and all, they were fun roads and I think everyone enjoyed
themselves. Our own Mark Nolte, driving his 323 GTX ,with Ed Storer
navigating, had more fun than anyone else, bringing home first overall with
82 points. Second place with 115 pts. was Teresa Davenport piloting a BMW
325ix, with Satch Carlson in the right hand seat. And the Breazeales 172 pts
in the Saab 900 Turbo secured third overall.
. TRNT featured miles and miles of 25 CASTs. The roads were like that, and
the big driving lights were seldom needed on the deserted roads. The
organizers prudently had 2 minute spacing, a real pleasure in the still, deep
forests. The rally used stop-at-the-CP controls, and after rolling up too
many weird errors, Ed and I decided to play the rallymaster's game and ran
"off" the Timewise's zero clock. The reward of lower scores kept us old
foggies awake all night as we second guessed wheelspin, odd mileages, and
checkpoint placement. It worked!
The night stop at a mini-mart allowed us to get the kind of road food that
keeps you awake...none of that soothing, wholesome food that makes teams miss
turns. Otherwise, the Oregon folks have developed a winning format.Ask Cristy
about staying at motels after all-night rallys -MN
*********Trivia
*Rod Johnson is spemding what little free time he has to help bring a
single-seater golf cart to market. The finer points of 12 volt propulsion are
being executed in his garage! If you have an hour, ask him about taking a
motorhome to Indiana. Not all hero drives include speed....
*Nolte got his Impreza 2.5 RS- Blue with gold wheels. R.Dale Kraushaar got a
Portland version.
* After some success at previous races, Ed Millman will be at a SOVREN race
during Nor'Wester. The Cortina spent some of August getting a professional
tunup.
