-------------Rally News
•The Saab 9000 of Sam Bryan/ Rob Walden won their class (Grp 5) at the Maine
PRO-Rally, which also clinched a win for SAAB in 1997. Besides watching a
SAAB representative accept a Manufacturer's Trophy, the team also won the Jon
Woodner award.
And they made my "good guy" list when they came out to Dryad Quest and
(happily?) worked my stage- MN
•NWRC yearly confab: No more Friday Niter's. They'll be on the second
Saturday night of each month. Friday was just too hectic. Herewith to be
called "Saturday Niter's".
Debbie Sjodin pointed out that the pizza at the finish cost more than
the entry fee, so last I heard the fee was now $10, with some sort of discount
for NWRC members (Ok, members of NWRC member clubs)
The dates were bid and decided with little thrashing or threats. See the
Calender for specifics.
•The Reno Divisional PRO-Rally drew four (4) cars. Rumors of the Nevada-
California passes being closed due to snow kept everyone at home.
The rally was a NW Region event until the Reno Region realized that it
would look good on their resume'.
• John Nispel has asked RASC to raise a crew for Doo Wop I&II on Valentines'
Day weekend. Saturday's three stage roads will be in the NW corner of Capitol
Forest, around the Porter Creek area. Sunday will be at the SE corner of the
forest, Bordeaux and all, with service probably at Mt. Molly.
We've worked these stages before; sometime we've needed storm suits, and
I recall worrying about sun burn once.
We'll try to get Vince to be Stage Captain.
The Calender has the latest dates. Note that Olympus isn't mentioned,
and the ORV Park uses the traditional first- weekend-in-August date.
Simpson Timber has agreed to let NWR use their forest on two weekends,
at $1500 each. The State forestry folks have OK'd use of their land pending
approval of insurance coverage. The requirements haven't been decided yet....
•The NW
h Sound
Community College. This is essentially on the west side of Hwy 101 (PDE and
the Olympia Dealer Mall being on the east side). Take the first exit from
northbound Hwy 101. L at the exit signal, then R toward the campus. It's from
3 to 10 PM, with dinner at 5:30 or so.
---------------Club News
• As the membership gently beat the new president into line, we discussed
running the food stand at the Solo Nationals. This raises money for the rally
program.
• Dues are due. $17 single, $20 family. Pay the treasurer or mail in the
money.
----------------Trivia
• Mike Jones is home recuperating from a 14 hour surgery to remove a tumor
crowding his cerebral cortex. It was big, and Mike will be at home for a few
months. Full recovery will take a bit longer.
• Gene Nelsen, longtime rally worker and THE expert on Capitol Forest, was
hospitalized for circulation problems in early December. He's home now, but
his feet are so swollen he hasn't worn real shoes for a month.
•The Russians have a popular TV program: following a car theft. If the
"thief"(carefully selected to keep out the professionals) avoids police for 30
minutes, he wins a car.
•Nolte sold the Mazda GTX to Mark Tabor of Portland ($3000 moved it) He looks
to be putting in most of the stuff that was removed for sale...
•Jim and Cristy Breazeale have their house for sale, the Jackelope PRO-Rally
car, the Tourismo project car, and nearly everything else. They want to to
pick up and start a new life, destination unknown.
