Rally News

Alcan 5000: Fourteen starters- thirteen motorcycles and a lone car, a ’54 Mercury in full La Carrera Panamericana colors. Twelve finishers, two DNF’s.

One motorcycle DNF’d when a rocker arm quit operating a valve.

Later, a broken foot was diagnosed after a boot slipped off a foot peg. Hmmm. A bike without a rider and a rider without a bike. These things work out.

The broken-footed rider caught a plane home. The Mercury only planned to go partway and return to it’s northwest home. That turned out to be the end of the first day.

Steve Brown, who did the pre-run with Jerry, ended up with the scoring computer. Kevin Barrows, once again, was Sweep.

Stage Rally – Full of high hopes, the NW Region of SCCA plans to have “observers” at the Wild West weekend, September 11 & 12. The SCCA Pro Rally Board removed it from the National calendar last year, and it will hopefully qualify after a smooth operation in 2004.

The weekend is two Club events- Saturday’s “Sou’Wester” with 7 stages, and Sunday’s “Simpson Stages”, with 6. About 30 cars will start.

The RASC troops have dissipated. Nolte chose to use his radio as Road Guard, Ron Sorem has asked to be a Pace car, and Tom Palidar volunteered his crew (from Puget Sound Rally Club) to work with the Oregon corps.

* Paul Choinere/Jeff Becker won the Maine Forest ProRally on the road, but lost when they did questionable servicing in a “gas only” location.

A protest of the ruling supported whatever they did, and they are again winners. It was based on questionable phrasing of the “gas only” service instruction.

Now Jeff has been appointed to the ProRally Board.

Trivia

  • Dan Comden got a great deal on a grey ’83 Saab turbo this spring. He learned how to replace the clutch. That turned out so much fun that he acquired a green ’85 car, with the more powerful 16-valve engine. Now his Blazer is for sale- he can’t see buying insurance for all those vehicles.

  • John Nispel sold the ex-Nolte Impreza RS to John Forespring.

  • Mike Jones claims the (garage queen) Fire Arrow is closer to its new home in the mid-west. While a freight company will carry the chassis, the engine will take a different route.

Rainier Auto Sports Club

will meet this coming Monday,  September 13 at 7:30 PM at Café Veloce at the Totem Lake shopping center. Best way I can think of to get there is north on I-405, take the "NE 124th" exit, then keep right under NE 124th and straight at the signal. This puts you on Totem Lake Blvd, not whatever the frontage road is next to I-405. Then right first poss, with the Café on your right at that point.

Monthly meetings are the second Monday of each month. Past Members, visitors, and spectators are welcomed.

Agenda: Summer Alcan report from Jerry. Eric can thrill those present with news of the much anticipated October Friday Nighter. Maybe some “sharing” of the recent Club Rallys.

President: Steve Willey – (206) 417-8517; Vice-President:;   Marvin Crippen –(206)365-5915
