The Wishbone Alley Gazette April, 2011 Rainier Auto Sports Club Rally News *Raindrop (April 17) checkout went well on April 3. Well, there was excitement when a road was impassible with snow, but that is the last snow for the year. Rallymaster Robert Gobright laid out a 6-hour rally when the calcs were done; he's saying 190 miles, so the averages will be more than the 35 mph of past years. That explains the 9:30 FCO. Ron Sorem and Robert started out longer, and have whittled the Centralia-Castle Rock course down to make it all fit. The basic stuff is coming along, with dash plaques already arrived and Jim Breazeale volunteered to make trophies. RASC has a nicer record of smooth registration and scoring than when Nolte was doing it; too many people remember when it took longer to get the scores done than it took to run the rally! http://www.rainierautosports.com/events/2011/raindrop/default.htm This promises to be almost exciting since the Centralia area isn't as over-rallyed as our usual haunts. Damn convenient to start at Starbucks in Centralia! The checkout crew tested the beer and pizza at the finish- and approved. *Changes- The "Rally America" name is being replaced by "RallyCar", mostly due to conflicts with that name. Along with that comes the new U.S. Rallycross Championship. Six events featuring side-by-side slippin' and slidin' on un-paved (mostly) surfaces. The second event "Twin Peaks' is at the Old Mill Rally Park on April 15-16. No specifics on what will happen, but the old Weyerhaeuser plywood mill site has a big building that could shield spectators from the Snoqualmie, Washington weather. NW stage rallyists will be bust prepping for Olympus, and RASC has Raindrop on the 16th. *Forget the old "PRG" (Pacific Rally Group) ? The Olympus is being organized by the same faces, just under a different name: Olympusrally. * Volunteer registration is now open at www.olympusrally.com?, Please go to the volunteer tab (or directly to www.rallydata.com ) to register. Remember to put your favorite duty or captain you'd like to work with in the 'comments' section of the registration form and we'll do our best to accommodate your request! Without the dedication of our great volunteers in the PNW, none our rallies could happen! ??Host hotel will again be the Best Western in Ocean Shores. A complete listing of hotel accommodations is also on the website. ??Tentative schedule - Saturday; Brooklyn, Smith Creek & Palix. Sunday will be roads north of Ocean Shores. End-of-Rally banquet will be in Ocean Shores. ? -Tracy Manspeaker The RallyCar event uses familiar roads: Saturday uses the Palix, Smith Creek, Brooklyn and Pico stages. Sunday heads north from Ocean Shores to Wreck Creek, Taholah, and Crane Creek stages. Crane Creek is under snow, and may have to be graded, for real $, for rally weekend. * Less than a year until the 2012 Alcan (Feb. 23>March 2). Entry is already up to about 15 entrants, including 3 RASC members not working. http://www.alcan5000.com/ Club News * March Meeting notes: Played out very much a replay of the February meeting (without Dan Comden passing out the reflective "snowflake" stickers). Fleshing out plans for a July, 2012 Nor'Wester revival seem to be headed toward only a two-day weekend. The all-important overnight would be in Lewiston, ID. Using the "run-work" method would eliminate the hassles of having dedicated workers. Although a long, long way off, Rallymaster Jerry says he has 14-15 entrants for the winter event. He'll do a course survey in late-November. He's planning on 20-30 competitors, since lodging tends to get scarce that time of year. No Alibi: still too early to do much course work, the budget is firmed up with no provisions to pay for worker rooms, just the dinner. Raindrop: Its longish, but faster roads will keep it to reasonable time-frame. Some mention that Motel 6 is nearby. Preliminary plan is to use (?) 8 checkpoint crews. RASC had 4 people to work the March Friday Nighter: Steve Richards and Mary Lee kept time and records, while Jim Breazeale (the RASC NWRC rep) greeted each arrival and passed the logs back and forth in between raindrops. Mark Nolte brought along 3 timing lights and the CP sign, but did nothing during the actual operation. Ron Sorem reported that the Targa Canada-West was scheduled opposite Oregon Trail stage rally; he wouldn't be able to participate. And- Jim Breazeale replaced the H4 bulbs in his Audi with aftermarket HID's. "Best investment so far". TRIVIA * Colleen Hines replaced her much-loved Audi for a silver Mini. Rainier Auto Sports Club will meet this coming Monday, April 11, at 7:30 PM at Caf‚ Veloce at the Totem Lake shopping center. Best way I can think of to get there via north on I-405, take the "NE 124th" exit, then keep right under NE 124th and straight at the signal. This puts you on Totem Lake Blvd, not whatever the frontage road is next to I-405. Then right first poss, with the Caf‚ on your right at that point. Monthly meetings are usually the second Monday of each month. Past Members, visitors, and spectators are welcomed. Agenda: The Treasurer, worn out after the flurry of collecting membership dues, might be able to report just how big the check was that he cut to NWRC for insurance and membership. Robert can fill us in on how Raindrop is going to work out, possibly fingering more CP workers from those present. Plus tidbits about No Alibi. 2011 Board Members: President, Robert Gobright, Fundimech@gmail.com Vice President, Cristy Breazeale, blackholeracing@yahoo.com Secretary, Jeff McMillen, jeff@somepants.com Treasurer, Steve Mats Mats, willey@selby.com At Large, Marvin Crippen, mandos@gmail.com At Large, Dan Comden, dan@comdens.com The Wishbone Alley Gazette is published for the members and friends of Rainier Auto Sports Club.
