Rally News
o ORV Park Sprints: About 25 entrants, some sharing a car. Dave Clark
dominated in his Omni.
Kirk Simons did 2nd in class on Saturday, but had his Saturday evening party
limited by a split exhaust pipe. Matt Sweeney contributed some time and skill
(and a small welding set) to get the car ready for Sunday’s battle. Kirk, with
Geoff Case in the right seat, won his class on Sunday.
The Jackelope (or whatever Mark Wilkie calls it now) faired much worse- it
rolled.
He wasn’t alone, since a VW GTI from Arlington also crunched its roof.
o Alcan 5000: Late news items:
1) Media coordinator Jim Elder has just added coverage with Alaska Magazine,
plus a new Ford web site. This is in addition to the articles he's already
doing for OPEN ROAD, and the Jeep and Dodge web sites. (Jim is also looking
to borrow a digital camera to facilitate feeds to these and other web sites)
2) Magellan is in as a sponsor, and will furnish some loaner GPS units plus a
prize for a separate GPS competition.
3) If anyone is still looking for a co-driver, long-time participant Mark
Wojtkiewicz from Vermont is looking for a ride. Let me know and I'll put you
in touch.
4) If we have anyone who'd like to enter but needs a vehicle, I have an ‘88
Caravan V6 here that could be available pretty cheaply. Alloy wheels, new
205/65R15 tires, and the AC even works...
We will need a couple of TSD crews for Saturday Aug 29; if a crew wants to
make the trip all the way to Quesnel we'll do a room for them Sat night.
Entrants: There are one or two entries not listed yet, but the total is still
at 10 to 12. Looks like the GM strike has had a ripple effect this year!
-ISUZU RODEO: Revere Jones, Brian Deno, tba. Rev Jones was a member of the 2nd
place team in the 1996 Alcan .
-SUBARU OUTBACK: Jack Fitzgerald, Tom Fitzgerald, Mary Lowry. Jack & Tom are
from Ohio. Mary is doing a newspaper feature and daily updates for the Everett
Herald. These 3 also completed the 96 Alcan Winter Rally, Mary in a Discovery
and the Fitzgeralds in a Montero.
-FORD RANGER: Jeff Armstrong, tba
-HONDA PASSPORT: Stephen Jencks, tba
-SUBARU IMPREZZA 2.5 RS: Christopher Cramer, Jeff Gowdy. Avid followers of
rallying, vintage racing, and autocross with the SCCA and PCA. This will be
their first Alcan.
-TBA, Chris Butler, Joseph Sheehan.
-JEEP CHEROKEE: Ker Boyce, Donna Dolan. Veterans of the 1996 One Lap of
America, this is their first Alcan Rally.
-SAAB 900: Brain Johnson, Raymond Johansen, Anne-Marie Gregory
-FORD EXPEDITION: John Street, Matt Graham. Lots of vintage racing and
mechanical expertise here, these two chose an SUV so they won't have to turn
wrenches this week. John also completed the 96 Alcan Winter Rally in a Land
Rover Discovery.
-Jim Arnold, tba. Jim ran the first Alcan 5000 in 1984.
-EAGLE TALON AWD: Walt Kammer & Jackie Adams
-FORD F350 (Press vehicle): Jim and Suzanne Elder, Jackson Hole, WY. Jim is a
long-time professional photographer and does a lot of automotive work. He is
also our Alcan 5000 Media Coordinator and will do a story for Open Road. Jim
& Suzanne ran the 96 winter rally in a Bravada.

Rainier Auto Sports Club will meet this coming Monday, August 10, at 7:30 PM
at CoCo's in Bellevue, (520 112th Ave., between the "NE 8" and "NE 4th" Exits of 405 on the west side
of the Hwy.) We have a meeting room set aside in the back. Monthly meetings
are the second Monday of each month. Past Members, visitors, and spectators
are welcomed. Agenda:
Wide ranging topics: ORV Rallysprints. Jerry might have something to tell
about the Alcan.
Nolte will tell how the Saturday Niter trophies are coming, how the dash
plaques will look, how the route looks. Nolte will have ES1000 flyers
available in one form or another.
Nolte will hide under the table as Terry Simons attempts to gloss over the
fact that a weekend of flippin’ burgers was more profitable than all the
rally’s he’s chaired, combined. There might be a report of The Road Not Taken, Oregon’s contribution to the
SCCA Touring Rally series.
